The Service

What is Lip Neutralization?

Lip Neutralization is a specialized form of permanent makeup designed for clients with naturally cool, dark, purple, blue, gray, or uneven lip tones.

Rather than simply adding a pink or nude color on top of the lips, neutralization works by strategically introducing warmth into the tissue to help balance and correct underlying cool tones — before building toward a desired healed result.

Because every client's natural lip tone is different, neutralization is often a journey completed over multiple sessions rather than a one-time appointment.

What's Normal

How color changes during healing.

One of the most important things to understand is that lips can look very different throughout the healing process. Every one of the changes below is completely normal.

Appears Brighter Right After

Fresh pigment looks more vibrant immediately. This fades as healing begins.

Gets Darker Before It Gets Lighter

A normal part of healing — the color peaks before it settles and softens.

Looks Uneven Temporarily

Certain areas heal faster than others. Unevenness during healing is expected.

Seems to Disappear Completely

Pigment can appear to vanish as new skin forms. It's still there — settling.

Returns Gradually Over Weeks

The true healed color reveals itself slowly, over 4–6 weeks.

Trust the process. The healed result cannot be evaluated until the lips have fully healed.

Important to Know

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

Some clients — particularly those with deeper skin tones or a history of hyperpigmentation — may experience temporary darkening during healing.

PIH is a natural response where the body produces additional pigment during the healing process after experiencing trauma or inflammation. If this occurs, you may notice:

  • The area may temporarily appear darker than it did immediately after treatment
  • Certain sections of the lips may appear uneven
  • The lips may look like they are getting darker before they improve

In most cases, this darkening gradually improves as the body continues to heal and inflammation resolves. This temporary stage does not necessarily represent your final healed result.

If you have concerns, text us — we'll talk you through it.

The Process

Why multiple sessions are often needed.

Lip Neutralization is typically performed in stages. The goal is not to force the lips to become pink in a single session — instead, we build gradually toward your desired result.

01

Neutralize Cool Undertones

Warm pigment is introduced to counteract the blue, purple, or gray tones beneath the surface.

02

Improve Overall Lip Tone

The overall color balance shifts toward a more even, natural-looking base.

03

Create Better Color Balance

Each session builds on the last, bringing the lips closer to the desired healed result.

04

Build Toward Your Goal Safely

Gradual layering produces healthier, more predictable, and longer-lasting results than trying to achieve everything in one session.

This approach produces healthier, more predictable, and longer-lasting results.

A Note From Chare'e

Trust the process.

Lip Neutralization is one of the most advanced procedures in permanent makeup. Healing can feel emotional because color changes frequently throughout the process — and what you see during healing is rarely your final result.

The best results come from patience, proper aftercare, and completing the recommended treatment plan. Every set of lips heals differently, and every neutralization journey is unique.

We are with you through every step. Text us any time with questions — we'd rather hear from you than have you worry alone.

Good to Know

Lip neutralization FAQs.

Why do my lips look so different right after the appointment?

Fresh pigment always looks more vibrant, warmer, and brighter than the healed result. This is normal across all lip procedures — but especially with neutralization, where warmth is deliberately introduced to counteract cool tones. Give it the full healing period before evaluating the result.

My lips look darker now than they did right after — is something wrong?

No — this is one of the most common concerns we hear, and it's a completely normal part of healing. The color often peaks (looks darkest) before it begins to soften and lighten. It is also possible you are experiencing some Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH). In most cases this resolves on its own as healing progresses.

What is PIH and do I need to worry about it?

PIH stands for Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation — a natural response where the body produces extra pigment at the site of trauma or inflammation. It is more common in clients with deeper skin tones or a history of hyperpigmentation. It typically appears as additional darkening during healing and resolves gradually on its own. Text us if you have concerns — we'll talk you through it.

Will I need more than one session?

Most clients do. Lip Neutralization is designed as a staged process — the goal is never to force a dramatic change in a single session. Each appointment builds on the last, moving gradually toward your desired result in a way that is safe for the tissue. The number of sessions depends entirely on your natural lip tone and how your skin heals.

When will I see my final result?

The healed result cannot be evaluated until the lips have fully healed — typically 4–6 weeks after your appointment. What you see during the first few weeks is not your final outcome. Please wait the full healing period before drawing any conclusions.

What should I do to take care of my lips during healing?

Keep them moist — use Aquaphor or Vaseline regularly. Do not pick, peel, or scratch. Avoid spicy, salty, or oily foods. No pools, saunas, or heavy sweating for 10 days. Avoid direct sun on the lips. Text us at (502) 906-6088 with any questions.
