Understanding The Science Behind Microchanneling

Microchanneling stands out among various skin procedures due to its remarkable ability to address multiple skin concerns simultaneously. By targeting wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, acne scars, sagging skin, and more, microchanneling offers a comprehensive solution for individuals seeking to improve their skin’s condition.  Moreover, its effects extend beyond mere surface-level enhancements, setting it apart from temporary remedies like makeup, facials, or quick-fix skincare masks. Unlike these superficial alternatives, microchanneling delves into the core of skin issues, facilitating genuine healing from within. With the growing popularity of microchanneling, more and more people are becoming aware of its potential benefits. However, uncertainties often deter them from taking the leap. Questions arise regarding whether their specific skin problems can benefit from microchanneling, how the procedure works, and if it has garnered scientific and medical approval. To obtain definitive answers, it becomes essential to delve deeper into understanding what microchanneling truly entails and its underlying mechanisms. By familiarizing oneself with the scientific principles behind this procedure, individuals can make informed decisions regarding their skin’s needs and determine whether microchanneling is the right choice for them. Let’s get started!

What is Microchanneling?

Microchanneling involves creating tiny channels in the dermis using small-sized needles in a stamping motion. These needles are designed to be extremely small, ensuring they do not cause permanent damage or penetrate beyond the outermost layer of the skin. The purpose of these channels is to get the skin to respond to an injury. When the primary sensory neurons on our skin sense an injury, they send signals to the brain that the skin is in danger. The neurons sense a threat even when the injury is minor, such as a pinprick. When the brain receives the danger signals, it turns on the skin’s response system to a wound. This kickstarting of the wound-healing procedure is what improves our skin.

The Inner Workings of Microchanneling

The wound-healing procedure has several stages, and each step benefits our skin and targets various skin issues.  Let’s take a look at all the stages our skin goes through as it starts its healing journey:
  • The Inflammatory Phase

Right after the brain receives signals that an injury has been inflicted, it kickstarts a wound-healing response that begins with the inflammatory phase. The purpose of this phase is to stop the bleeding immediately and eliminate all the harmful germs that might infect the open wound. In this phase, the peripheral blood mononuclear cells are responsible for causing inflammation, driving out all the pathogens, completely cleaning the wounded area, stopping the bleeding, and returning the skin to its normal balanced state, otherwise known as homeostasis.   In microchanneling, this phase is experienced by the client almost immediately after their session. Their skin becomes red, which concerns many when in reality, the skin has begun its healing process and is conducting a deep cleanse from within.
  • The Proliferative Phase

Once the wound is clean and stopped bleeding, the skin goes into the proliferative phase. This phase begins once the inflammation has died down, which is nearly 1 to 3 days after the injury.  The main purpose of this phase is to heal the wound, restore the wounded surface, and start rebuilding the tissue. It does so by performing four actions, namely, fibroplasia (formation of new connective tissue), reepithelialization (regrowth of the outer layer of skin), angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels), and peripheral nerve repair. In simpler words, the skin starts to generate new skin cells to restore the wounded skin and it does so by depositing collagen, hyaluronic acid, and other processes that are overall excellent for our skin health. It is during this phase that our skin begins to heal not just the superficial wounds created by microchanneling, but also the wrinkles, sagging skin, uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, etc. The proliferative phase of collagen starts working overtime to cover the wound gap. As a result, it deposits elastin, collagen, and other good matters that keep our skin bright, wrinkle-free, and youthful.
  • The Remodeling Phase

Finally, the last phase aims to complete tissue remodeling and restore the integrity of the skin. This phase is called the maturation and remodeling phase. During this phase, the wound continues to strengthen and mature. This phase typically begins around week 3 after the injury and can continue for up to 12 months. At this stage, excess collagen in the wound starts to break down, and wound contraction reaches its peak around week 3. Wound contraction is more significant in secondary healing compared to primary healing. Due to this phase, microchanneling continues to improve the skin texture for up to a year after the sessions. The results are even more visible and effective when microchanneling is paired with the right serums. The skin goes through a drastic change and becomes smoother, brighter, even-toned, less saggy, and just youthful and radiant.

Why Choose Microchanneling Instead of Microneedling?

The science behind microchanneling and microneedling is the same. However, the device used for microneedling has been known to leave permanent track marks because of the rolling motion across the skin. Microchanneling eliminates this downside by using a stamp-like device.
