Permanent Eyeliner Aftercare

Permanent Eyeliner Aftercare

The introduction of permanent eyeliner to the cosmetic industry has been a Godsend for those of us who struggle with applying daily eyeliner or suffer from raccoon-eye syndrome.

This semi-permanent makeup procedure takes place on top of your eyelids, which, when imagined, can make anyone squirmish.

But, you don’t have anything to worry about.

Contrary to popular belief, permanent eyeliner treatments are safe, relatively pain-free, and heal faster than other types of permanent makeup procedures such as microblading and microneedling. Aftercare is also a lot easier to manage, which will be the focus of this article.

What Does a Permanent Eyeliner Procedure Entail?

Permanent eyeliner is a unique cosmetic procedure in which the artist uses a tool similar to a tattoo gun to apply eyeliner on your eyelids. This eyeliner is semi-permanent because the pigment is injected into the topmost layer of your skin, much like a tattoo.

As such, permanent eyeliner is also referred to as an eyeliner tattoo and is highly customizable. Most people go for a subtle liner close to the lash line so it can add depth and bring out the natural color of their eyes without appearing too bold.

However, you can ask your makeup artist for any style you wish. You can even go for a winged liner if you prefer something bold.

How Should You Care for Your Permanent Eyeliner?

For the smoothest healing journey, you must follow the instructions given to you by your makeup artist. Their advice and suggestions trump everything you may find on the internet because they are the experts who have seen and worked on your skin to make a sound judgment.

That said, it’s never a bad idea to do your research and know what to expect. Here’s a gist of what aftercare for a permanent eyeliner looks like:

Dry Healing and Wet Healing

The most important thing to know is that you have two options when it comes to the aftercare. You can either opt for dry healing or wet healing.

As indicated by its name, dry healing requires keeping the tattoo clean and dry. This is a preventative form of aftercare and all you need to do is ensure that no water or product touches the area.

This method involves cleaning the tattoo multiple times a day, using a damp cotton pad. The tattoo will begin to scab soon after a couple of days and you must not pick at them. This method is perfect for those who are short on time and cannot be bothered by rigorous aftercare. The downside of this method is the heavy scabbing that follows.

Wet healing is the more common of the two methods and requires you to clean the tattooed area more frequently using a gentle cleanser, several times a day. You will also need to apply a medicated ointment.

Prevention

Whether you choose to follow wet healing or dry healing, you will need to take some preventative methods following your procedure, such as:

  • You must not undergo any other cosmetic procedure until two months after permanent eyeliner.
  • You must avoid all activities that can make you sweat excessively, such as cardio, sauna, hiking, etc.
  • Avoid dusty areas
  • Avoid spaces that are likely to have airborne bacteria and chemical
  • Avoid using skincare products with strong chemicals such as derivatives of vitamin A, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, etc.
  • Avoid using an eyelash curler
  • Avoid eye makeup
  •  Do not wear contacts
  • Avoid rubbing or scratching your eyes
  • Avoid picking at the scabs
  • Avoid long and hot showers and prioritize minimizing contact with water.
  • Wash your face only using a gentle cleanser and do not splash your face aggressively.
  • Ensure that your pillowcases are clean to avoid infection.

How Long Does It Take to Completely Heal?

With proper care and prevention, permanent eyeliner takes between 30 to 45 days to completely heal. You are not required to follow the aftercare instructions during the entirety of this healing period.

You will only need to take proper care of the tattooed eyeliner for the first two weeks.  Your care and prevention during the initial period will dictate how fast the permanent eyeliner heals.

You can expect it to heal the same way any scrape would. On the first and second days, It will feel raw, swollen, tight, and even a little itchy, and will require you to clean and moisturize properly and regularly. At this point, the appearance of your liner will be overly dark and thick, of course, this will change once it is completely healed.

Around the third or the fourth day, the tattooed area will begin to scab. It will also lighten in appearance. At this stage, you’d be expected to continue following the aftercare instructions.

Towards the end of the first week, it will start flaking, and you’ll begin to get glimpses of the results. The pigment will settle down and appear more natural. The permanent makeup should have healed considerably by now. However, you may still have to continue taking care, depending on the instructions of your makeup artist.
